Late Period (Late 19th)     Shahrisabz region     162 x 244 cm

An extremely rare Suzani whose lively tree design, reminiscent of fairytales, was embroidered on a ground of black velvet in brilliantly diverse, almost jazzy colours. In the border, the large fan-shaped palmettes with feathered outlines, alternatively pointing inwards and outwards and framed by a wide ring, are particularly striking. This Suzani was probably made by the Lakai nomads in the Shakhrisyabz area. – Somewhat stained, otherwise very well preserved. The edges have been backed with ikat fabric, the striped cotton fabric on the reverse is torn.
