Early Period (Before 19th Century and Early 19th)     Shahrisabz region     201 x 247 cm

Judging by the type of stitches, style and palette, this fabulously beautiful Suzani silk embroidery on a five-panel ground is unmistakably from Shakhrisyabz, the Green City in the Emirate of Bokhara where many of the best Suzanis were produced.

On account of its rich and complex design, the quality of its embroidery and magnificent colours, it is datable to the 18th century. The extra-wide border displays the characteristic formal repertoire, although here it appears more opulent and lively than in other outstanding pieces and includes four stars in the large circular blossoms. The secondary borders show varying vines. – The aubergine sections of the design are heavily corroded. Several darned areas and stains. Not backed with fabric.
