This yellow-ground silk embroidery in iraki (cross stitch) technique was made in Shakhrisyabz or its immediate surroundings. It was once used as a tablecloth. As the women of the Lakai tribes had attained a particular feeling for expressive colour combinations, this seems a reasonable attribution for this Suzani. Large formats such as the piece offered here had to be made in sections and joined together due to the small dimensions of the embroidery frames on which they were worked. According to research by Tschepelewezkaja, such tablecloths were produced for the beys of Shakhrisyabz. – Signs of age and wear, several dark stains, seams damaged in places, minor areas of discolouration.
