A splendid Suzani from the emirate of Bokhara.
Emanating from a large, eight-pointed star placed at the centre of the field, together with five poppy blossoms and flowering shrubs, four diagonal blossoming trees extend into the field corners. Further plants cover the remaining area.
The wide border shows an endless repeat of a design composed of four sweeping, flowering branches arranged around a central flower.
This Suzani has been owned by an Irish family with close ties to India since 1923, and is said to have been a gift from a Maharaja. Always used as a wall hanging, it is very well preserved.
