This Suzani stand out on account of its almost square format. It was made in the town of Dzhizak in the south of the Emirate of Kokand, where a mountain pass links the northern and southern parts of Uzbekistan. Four poppy blossoms have been radially arranged around a large oval containing a red central poppy blossom at the centre of the field. Eight further poppy blossoms appear at the sides and in the corners of the field. Each flower is surrounded by bold, dark green vines. The main design is complemented by a multitude of smaller motifs – sickle leaves, botehs, palmettes, crosses and stylised animals embroidered in brilliant and diverse colours. The small, diagonal triangular designs in the corners are decorative Turkmen amulets. – Slight signs of age, good overall condition. Backed with fabric.
